" I am what I am"
A short quote that I heard last Monday in creative writing class. It was mbak Sonya. Yeah! Last Monday we had special guest, and the guest was Mbak Sonya. Olivia Sonya Aresta is her full name, but usually people call her Sonya. She is one of activist in PKBI Yogyakarta. Mmm.. it is a little bit difficult to tell where she comes from. Born in Klaten, lived for several years in Klaten then moved to Cilacap then back to Jogja, but in her identity card she lives is Bandung.
Last Monday, she shared her experience with us. For me she is special, yes she is. She was born as the first son in her family. She spent her childhood in Klaten. She told us that her childhood was very happy. Then why ? "Because children is innocent, they can do everything they want," said Mbak Sonya. When she was a child, she preferred to play with a girl. A girl ? Yes, it is. She prefer to play "masak-masakan", barbie with the girls. Then a question comes to my mind, Why ?. She answered it shortly " because the boys are naughty". She told us that boy are naughty, rude and like to bully her so then she prefer to play with the girls. And this comfort zone continued until she entered the school. She dressed up as a normal boy, but again she preferred to socialize with the girls. Even her chairmate was a girl and she had a best-friend also a girl. At this time, she has decided to be a woman. Her decision of course made some people didn't agree, especially her mom. Her mom is the one who disagree with her decision, but for Mbak Sonya it doesn't make any matter. She proud of her self. She believes that she can do anything better even than a real woman. " I'm proud of my self. I can cook tastier than other woman and I can work properly than a man who cannot work and get money as well as me," said Mbak Sonya.
Eventhough , she is different from the other woman, but her spirit is really inspire us. No matter what she believes that she can do better than the others.
" I love people surround me, I love people who loved me and I'm proud to be my self." said Mbak Sonya in the end our conversation.
